Water-based and oil- or alkyd-based coatings have different drying behaviour, clean-up methods and common uses. Neither category has one fixed coverage rate. Two paints with the same base can cover very different areas depending on pigment, sheen, viscosity and the surface underneath.
| Consideration | Water-based paint | Oil / alkyd paint |
|---|---|---|
| Common uses | Interior walls, ceilings and many modern trim systems | Selected trim, doors and specialist coating systems |
| Drying | Often quicker to recoat under suitable conditions | Often needs longer between coats |
| Clean-up | Usually water-based, subject to the label | Often needs the recommended solvent or cleaner |
| Coverage | Check the exact m²/L or sq ft/gal figure | Check the exact m²/L or sq ft/gal figure |
Coverage is product-specific
Do not assume oil-based paint automatically covers more or water-based paint automatically needs more. Look for the coverage on the tin and enter it as a custom value in Paintwise when it differs from the calculator’s general preset. A primer, high-opacity colour or specialty trim coating may use a different figure again.
Choose a compatible system
Compatibility matters more than broad labels. Read the technical data sheet for preparation, primer, recoat times and permitted existing coatings. If you are painting a previously glossy or uncertain surface, clean, test adhesion in a discreet area and follow the manufacturer’s system advice.
Ventilation, safe storage and disposal instructions are part of the product label. Do not pour paint or solvents into drains.
